Pneumatophores and crab burrows increase CO2 and CH4 emission from sediments in two Brazilian fringe mangrove forests

چکیده

We assessed the release of greenhouse gases (CO 2 and CH 4 ) from air-exposed sediments dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) inundated in Brazilian mangrove forests. Our focus was on impact biogenic structures, i.e. pneumatophores crab burrows, gas emissions. Emission CO bare sediment (111-156 57-148 mmol m -2 d -1 darkness light, respectively) comparable to DIC (122-158 52-62 , respectively). Pneumatophores burrows increased dark emission during air exposure by 113-123 49-91%, respectively. (0.22-0.25 92-137 288-607%, respectively, burrows. Carbon loss form with structures can at two study locations be extrapolated 64.1 71.0 mol C yr . These values fit well literature litterfall studied area, providing accretion 28.5 21.6 However, budget will unbalanced if role is not considered. In presence emissions 2.8 3.3 (when converted units) partly (10-15%) counteract climate mitigation effect accumulated carbon. budgets may therefore flawed contribution ignored.

Burrows of the Semi-Terrestrial Crab Ucides cordatus Enhance CO2 Release in a North Brazilian Mangrove Forest

Ucides cordatus is an abundant mangrove crab in Brazil constructing burrows of up to 2 m depth. Sediment around burrows may oxidize during low tides. This increase in sediment-air contact area may enhance carbon degradation processes. We hypothesized that 1) the sediment CO2 efflux rate is greater with burrows than without and 2) the reduction potential in radial profiles in the sediment surrou...

Microbial diversity in Brazilian mangrove sediments – a mini review

The importance and protection of mangrove ecosystems has been recognized in Brazilian Federal law since 1965. Being protected in law, however, has not always guaranteed their protection in practice. Mangroves are found in coastal and estuarine locations, which are prime real estate for the growth of cities, ports and other economic activities important for Brazilian development. In this mini-re...
